Smashing, Great?

Can one game ever be enough to justify the purchase of a console?

{ Fri 13th June 2008 }

On the 27th of this month Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wii finally lands in the UK; oh how I love European release dates sometimes. I was something of a fan of Super Smash Bros. Melee on the Gamecube, it was one of those games that when a bunch of got together we'd probably wheel it out at some point for a session and it would always be highly entertaining. Even as a single player experience I'd have great fun just mucking about with it in the story mode or random bouts against the AI. So Brawl has been a game I've been keeping something of an eye on and was looking to be the one killer title that made a Wii a must have.

Recently I was over in the US of A enjoying a holiday with a group of friends and between them they provided a Wii, a whole range of controllers and a copy of Brawl to have a little play on when the mood grabbed us. I barely remembered the controls, couldn't remember any of the character's moves (except Jigglypuff - don't ask) and was rustier than a rusty rust pile on rust day. But, it must be said, despite all that, I enjoyed these little sessions a great deal. Annoyingly, I enjoyed these little sessions a greal deal.

See the issue I have is that I do not own a Wii, so in order to enjoy the wonders of Brawl I need to purchase one: something that will set me back a good £200 (once you throw in all the necessary accessories and the such like). Brawl is a killer title and does make me want a Wii, but with my back catalogue of games currently left unplayed growing at a rate I shouldn't be comfortable with, and the recent aquiring of a certain Rock Band (I caved, don't judge me), it becomes increasingly difficult to justify the required expense for one game.

So it seems that I shall remain Brawl-less, for a while at least, unless I magically find myself in possession of a Wii some time soon. That'd be nice.
